BLACK BIRD

Roll, You River

Roll, you river.  Roll down to the sea.  Well, if you look around, now don't
you look for me.  I long for summer, a walking staff and pack... miles of
highway and trouble at my back.

So roll, you river.  Roll right by my door.  You've seen the  changes of ten
thousand years or more.  Well, I've seen day dreams and drank up empty sky
but you'll be rolling still... years when I have died.

And all the while, I'll chase my dreams to the sea.  And in a little while,
you'll reach the ocean like me.

So roll, you river.  Roll down through the years.  Have you seen
happiness... or felt your share of tears?  Well, I've been down and out and
lost along the road but I found freedom like Sidhartha in the cold.

So, roll, you river.  Roll away with me.  There'll be rapids on our journey
to the sea... lofty canyons... some cattle grazing wild... well, ancient
lover, I'm a gangling child.

And all the while, time pours like blood from a wound.  Give a little smile,
(my) life will be over to soon.

Love Song

One voice in the night... soft but sincere... like sparrows in flight...
like someone might hear.

Two voices alone... in harmony sing... to share in the song...  and joy it
may bring.

Take leaves that shine with summer's rain.  Take love, return it back again..
I love you.

Bikila

Ships sail on a plain of broken glass.  This feeling washes hard but
cannot last.  I feel the pull of years closing in.  The day that you
walked out on me was the end.

Run like Bikila.  The palace is on fire.  I have felt the flames of
love... consumed in love's desire.

Speak the whisper soft each time you dare.  Which way the road will
lead me, I do not care.  Caught here in this harbor town once again....
just another unwanted shelter from the wayward wind.

Run like Bikila.  Run into you grave.  There is no way to leave now
and there is no way to stay.

Peace and Plenty

Peace and plenty... I wish you to have love (falling rain) from the
sky... stars in the evening... sunbright the day... bright as the
cascade of light from your eyes.  Silvering driftwood on the shore.  I
wish you this and much more.

Love and Laughter... I wish you to have branches of autumn that fall
into gold... icicles in winter that melt in the spring... remember
those icy ones to cold to hold.  Warmth in the morning and before.  I
wish you this and much more.

Against the Chine

Birds churn the water as they feed.  Blue cutter breaks to take the lead.
She's from Alaska, here to fish... to share the silver seagull's wish and
sup the ocean's salty fare... to shake the wind from sails and hair and play
a waiting game of hope with anchor chains and nylon rope.

We are the floats upon the nets, adrift through time.  We are the ribs along
the row, against the chine.

Above the tree-line in the clouds, an eagle circles light and proud.  She is
a hunter from the skies.  The rainbow flashes in her eyes.  Eyes trace the
river's flow below... born of sun and melting snow... unwinding down green
drapery... through tangled boughs out to the sea.

We are the bones upon the ground, under green trees.  We are the
watchers of the wind upon the breeze.

Candle in the Rain

Sarah packed up her car.
She knew she wouldn't get to far
with a borrowed twenty dollar bill
and a black cat name Sam.
She drove all night toward the moon
(watched her forest melt to dune)
She said, "I cannot take the pain."
That's just the way I am."

New love shines a special light,
but it's a candle in the rain...
washes down a silent night...
leaving nothing but the pain.

....a truckstop, broke and broke down
outside some dusty desert town.
Just how far would she go
to escape his control.
....faining sleep on the back seat...
black-Sam curled at her feet.
Should she give him a call.
Would he worry at all.

New love shines a special light,
but it's a candle in the rain...
washes down this silent night...
leaves her nothing but the pain.

Neptune's Daughter
(an improbable dream)

She might walk by the water...
...stand alone by the sea...
looking like Neptune's daughter...
...llooking sideways at me.

The pearls in her eyes
they make me weak in my knees.

So I walk to the ocean...
...stand alone on the quay...
...watch the water in motion...
watch it wash over me.

She pulls me in close
just as close as can be.

I'm not sayin' I'm drowning.
I'm not sayin' I'm not.
Maybe you caught me frowning,
thinkin' things I forgot.

...things I wanted to say
long before I got caught.

But can I hide this emotion...
...buried deep in the sea...
...covered up by the ocean...
Neptune's daughter and me.

...impossible love.
...an improbable dream.
